Sorry I've been reading the 2009 Farmer's almanac for the last 4 months

I'm alive!!!! Sorry I took a hiatus this summer to fish and improve my relations with British parliament... and yes, the fishing was fantastic. Buy hey, I'm back, and lets be honest since I left your life has not been the same. When I last left you, a poll stated that the meager followers that did read my blog wanted to hear about the olympics. Well here it goes: The 12 year old chinese girls beat us good.

I do however want to talk about a article that came out today about the new 2009 Farmer's almanac - probably the greatest source of knowledge for retirees. An article located here talks about the Almanac predicting Global cooling for the next half century. So wait, the earth is cooling? Global warming enthusiasts - "Oh thats just a sign of global warming." Wait, so now global warming is global cooling.... I'm confused. Ok, so let me try to figure this out... by getting cooler, we are getting warmer.... hmmm....
Joking aside, do we need to be concerned about our planet? I believe we do, heck, we are stewards of it. And as stewards, we must be concerned about the ability of our planet to perform its proper functions. But!!!!! you don't see me running to the local windfarm to build a windmill in my backyard to "do my part"
Lets be honest, is that data that were basing Global warming on, really that accurate? Well, I suppose according to scientific theory its pretty good. Oh yeah, I forgot that we have millions of years of data.... wait we dont? Oh man, then why have I been paying attention to the news so much? But honestly, scientists who try to publish data against global warming get publicity right?.... they dont? Oh crap.
My opinion... we do whats not only good for our planet, but also benefits us as stewards. If that be investing in alternative energy sources, then all guns ahead. But prudence must be used. We have too many fanatics that are running out there buying Hybrids because "its my responsibility" without checking the facts. For example, a hybrid can take over 6 years to realize any benefits through gas because of their increased price.... but wait they help the environment don't they.... huh, your telling me their batteries have been shown to be harmful? Oh man this all getting so confusing.
So what is your opinion on global warming and why?

Three words...biofuels.
Seriously though, I do think it's probably a bad idea to base a large part of the economy (transportation, shipping, energy) on things with the work "non-renewable" in them. (Although I've always questioned--if things are dying all the time, shouldn't there constantly be new oil being produced?) So renewable fuel sources seem like the way to go for me, stuff like wind and solar are great, but as far as vehicles, well, there needs to be a lot more work done before anything is at the point that I would consider it "viable". Fuel cells won't be until they can find a replacement for platinum, hybrids won't be until batteries and motors are made more efficient. Basically I do agree that a lot of the problem with "Why don't we have the flying cars yet?" stems from the fact that we as a population are pretty lazy. Gas was cheap, it was easy to get, we like fire, why work harder? I don't want to jump on the global warming bandwagon, because there's not enough verifiable information to use it as a motivating source, but I think $4.00/gal ought to motivate us enough to at least improve gas mileage, and maybe finally get those flying cars onto the assembly line...

Hybrids can indeed be horrible investments even if their batteries don't fail (and the manufacturer says the failure isn't to the extent that they will actually own up on the warranty they gave you) and you have to buy a new one. And buying a Toyota Sequoia or Chevy Tahoe for 17K can easily be a cheaper alternative to buying a 25K hybrid SEDAN (even factoring in the higher money spent on gas). So there goes my motivation to save the world.
Anyway, I do think we should explore other sources of fuel simply because we should be PISSED that Venezuelans get their fuel for 16 cents a gallon. So we have these maniac scientists and engineers making fuel from algae and designing more effective/efficient solar panels and wind mills (which apparently some animal rights activitst are claiming are bad because they somehow kill lots of bats) - but how come these ideas never get translated into widespread businesses? Get this thing figured out, or I'm moving to Australia.
